In Japan, during the Nara period, as Buddhism flourished and the practice of copying sutras ("shakyō") spread widely, demand for writing brushes surged throughout the country. Later, in the Heian period, the renowned calligrapher Kūkai brought the latest brushmaking techniques from China, passing this knowledge to Japanese artisans who crafted brushes for the imperial court. This marked the foundation of traditional Japanese "wafude" brushmaking.
